Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a British autonomous overseas territory with around 38,000 citizens, located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It has a long history of special strategic importance and a very strong sense of identity and self-determination.

The local government has always wanted to serve and support its citizens using the best technology and latest innovations. HM Government of Gibraltar first introduced chip-based identity cards in 2015 to enhance eGovernment services. It has now made a leap into digital membership passes stored in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet as part of its latest Smart City initiatives.

NFC Wallet eGov Pass

The Gibraltar eGov Pass is a free mobile wallet service that provides users with a simple, swift and secure way to interact with a growing range of Government services. The NFC Wallet membership pass offers a convenient contactless alternative to existing physical ID cards. It enables ‘just tap’ access to services including:

  • Parking
  • Social housing
  • Healthcare

A self-service kiosk at Parliament will also allow the public to check their voter registration details in advance of any elections or referenda, and more services such as postal collections and bus passes are planned for the future.

How did Dot Origin help?

Dot Origin worked closely with HM Government of Gibraltar’s Information Technology & Logistics Department and Digital Services teams for over 18 months, helping to guide these developments and supplying VTAP NFC readers for use in all these applications and locations. From embedded reader boards fitted inside parking machines to desktop and kiosk-mounted readers, complete with Government branding, Dot Origin’s NFC expertise and VTAP technology have been key contributors to the project’s success.

Warren Gomez, Senior Software Engineer from the core Gibraltar Government project team, sums it up:

“Your support throughout this process, from the regular catchups, reader firmware upgrades to support our eID Card, your technical guidance, and your patience in helping us navigate challenges has been truly invaluable. HM Government of Gibraltar genuinely could not have reached this milestone without Dot Origin’s assistance and expertise.”

Behind the scenes the Gibraltar government’s IT team undertook various software integration projects including with the car park, medical booking and other service provider platforms, and worked with their existing mobile app provider to develop the necessary integrations with Apple and Google for digital pass creation and ‘add to wallet’ flows.
